Building an E-Commerce Cart

Building TELUS's first e-commerce cart — from accessories only to a full phones and plans checkout.

Challenge
The previous experience took users from a product page directly into a "buy now" flow. Users couldn't add more than one item or save purchases for another day.
Solution
A phased cart experience — launching with accessories, then expanding to support phones and plans — built to scale across TELUS's full product ecosystem.

To validate, learn and improve the cart experience, we launched the cart in different phases.

Phase 1

Cart for accessories only.

Phase 2

Cart for accessories and new phone/plan activation.

Phase 3

Cart for accessories and all mobility users (current and new customers). Due to technical limitations, we had to operate a solution that would support two separate checkout flows — one for accessories, and another for mobility.

During discovery, we captured all the Jobs to be Done for both the consumer and business. Once we prioritized the needs, we brainstormed features that would help accomplish them. We then began wireframing a few options and user tested to get validation.

Product Detail Page

From the product detail page, users can select their colour, size and quantity. To add the item to cart, users can simply click on the "Add to cart" button.

Dropdown Notification

After the item has been added to cart, a notification will dropdown by the cart icon to confirm the action. The button will also change to "Added to cart" for 3 seconds.

Accessories Cart Review

The cart review page was created to allow users to edit and confirm their order prior to checkout.

Product Experience Page

We discovered that users wanted more education and information about devices to help decide which phone is best for them.

Product Configure Page

Once users click on one of the phones, they're directed to configure their phone and choose the right plan for them.

Cart Review

After configuring their phone/plan, they're directed to the cart review page. Due to technical limitations, we were unable to unify the phones and accessories flows together.
